06 July 2026 | Lifestyle, Lisbon, Sailing

From Belém to Avenida da Liberdade, passing by São Jorge Castle, set sail on our Hop-on Hop-off Lisbon route.

Hello, Lisbon sailor! I’m Benedita, born and raised in Lisbon’s most glamorous avenue, the Avenida da Liberdade. This grand boulevard, adorned with jacaranda blossoms during spring and sparkling with festive lights in December, is where my love for Lisbon began. As a designer, I draw endless inspiration from its energy and elegance.

Today, I'm inviting you to experience the city of the seven hills like never before through an enchanting 48-hour hop-on-hop-off Lisbon route by land and river.

Let’s explore this charming capital, seamlessly blending a voyage along the Tagus River with adventures through its vibrant streets. With the Lisboat and the Gray Line Lisbon map to guide us, every hill becomes a discovery. Ready for a Lisbon city tour by bus and river?

Hop-On Hop-Off Lisbon route: Padrão dos Descobrimentos

Day 1: From Belém to Avenida da Liberdade by river and land

Let’s begin our journey in Belém, where the scent of history lingers. Step aboard the Lisboat with me, and let the Tagus River guide us. As we glide along, we’ll take in the awe-inspiring sights of the Belém Tower and the grand Monument to the Discoveries, standing proudly as reminders of Portugal’s Age of Exploration.

Sailing towards the city centre, the river reveals Lisbon’s vivid personality. As the gentle waves of the Tagus carry us closer to the city's heart, you’ll witness how the morning light dances off the water, casting a glow over Lisbon's iconic skyline.

Cais do Sodré ho! It’s time for a pause in this neighbourhood bursting with energy and flavour. Here, we can have lunch diving into the culinary treasures of the Time Out Market. It’s a place to savour Lisbon in every sense.

Back on the waters? Let’s look at our hop-on hop-off Lisbon route map. Our journey continues past the lovely rooftops of Alfama and Bairro Alto, as the city’s magnificent São Jorge Castle watches over from its hilltop perch. When we arrive at Terreiro do Paço, let’s step ashore and feel Lisbon’s history beneath our feet. Wandering through the majestic Arco da Rua Augusta and into the bustling Rua Augusta, we’ll be surrounded by street performers and vibrant shops (prepare yourself to dance on the cobblestones!).

Livraria Bertrand Chiado

From Rua Augusta, let’s head towards Chiado, a neighbourhood where tradition meets sophistication. This lively district, filled with elegant shops and historic cafés, has long been a hub for artists, writers, and thinkers. Tucked among its beautiful streets, we’ll find Bertrand Bookstore, the world’s oldest operating bookshop. When stepping inside, we feel the weight of centuries of literary history. Wander its cosy aisles, where countless stories and ideas take us back to 1732. It’s a quiet haven in the city centre and a must-visit for any book lover.

Our walk unfolds into the elegance of Praça D. Pedro IV and towards the melody of the fountains at Rossio Square, where we can taste a typical pastel de nata with ginjinha in a chocolate cup. Every step invites us to immerse ourselves in Lisbon’s vibrant spirit.

From here, let’s stroll along the sophisticated Avenida da Liberdade, where tree-lined paths and designer boutiques exude charm and elegance. This iconic avenue is the perfect finale to our first day, offering a taste of Lisbon’s modern luxury intertwined with its historic soul. Here, you’ll find Michelin-starred restaurants that blend traditional Portuguese flavours with contemporary techniques, creating an unforgettable fine dining experience. So, are you in the mood for haute cuisine in this epicurean destination?

Day 2: São Jorge Castle and Tagus Sunset, here we go!

Let’s start our second day with the freedom to hop aboard the Gray Line red bus in Lisbon.  Where? At the Martim Moniz. From here, we’ll ascend to the enchanting São Jorge Castle.

But before that, why not stop in Alfama, one of Lisbon’s most soulful neighbourhoods? Alfama is also known for its cosy, family-run eateries where the menu often features classics like bacalhau à Brás, caldo verde, or grilled sardines—all served with a glass of refreshing vinho verde. The intimate, rustic ambience, often accompanied by the soft strumming of fado music, adds a magical touch to every meal, making it not just about food, but about a remarkable Lisbon experience. Do you wish to have lunch at a charming outdoor terrace with city views? After gaining energy, we’ll stroll through the narrow streets, uncovering treasures like the magnificent Lisbon Cathedral and the striking National Pantheon. When arriving at the Portas do Sol and Santa Luzia Viewpoints, we can take a long break to enjoy the scenic views of the Tagus.

São Jorge Castle in Lisbon

As the bus winds through the city, we can’t miss the final stop - and feel Lisbon beneath our feet - within the walls of São Jorge Castle! We can explore its history and soak in the panoramic views that stretch over the red rooftops and the glistening river.

Then, back in Terreiro do Paço, let’s get aboard a Lisbon Sunset Boat Tour with Lisboat to meet the sunset on the river. The golden hour is the perfect time to relax and enjoy the views of Lisbon from the Tagus (even better, to the sound of the DJ and with a refreshing drink).

Hop-On Hop-Off Lisbon: a 48-Hour Journey to Remember

This is more than a tour—it’s our shared journey to connect with Lisbon’s essence. With the freedom to hop on and off, each stop is a discovery. We’ll sail the Tagus, wander through history, and embrace the city’s vibrant neighbourhoods.
